Charlene Ashong Biog

Charlene is a Foodpreneur, Presenter and Lifestyle Creative. Debuting the TV presenting scene as a plant-based and healthy Italian cook, Charlene’s food expertise extends into lifestyle and creative expression, where her passion for music and fashion has always been to think outside of the box but always with light and life.

Her love for food and fashion was birthed after living in Italy for 10 years. After her time in modelling in Milan, teaching in Bologna and cooking in Abruzzo (with the real movers and shakers of the Italian food scene - the Nonnas) she was introduced to the beauty of the Italian farm to fork, but also how cost-effective, plant-based ingredients growing in the Italian terrain provided great health benefits and were really simple to prepare. Charlene discovered that although food looks and tastes amazing, its ability to affect our minds and bodies goes much deeper. If we feel good about our physical and mental health via what we eat, we will express a better version of ourselves. This led her to start creating naturally healthy Italian dishes with this holistic purpose. In 2015 Charlene turned her idea into a business in the shape of ‘Fitaly’ a predominantly plant-based, healthy Italian food to go brand, later residing in Kensington where local resident Piers Morgan became a regular.

Charlene was spotted by producers at Jamie Oliver’s Food Tube (Fresh One Productions) while cooking and serving on her street food truck in 2016. Weeks later her first recipe went live on Food Tube attracting over 101k views. She went on to film some more healthy Italian dishes with Fresh One and featured as the talent for an IWC Media (Banijay) pilot ‘4 Italian Foods’. Suitably matched to her lifestyle cooking style, Charlene was asked to create a set of 'detox' inspired healthy dishes for a mini-series on ITV Daytime's Lorraine. Self-titled ‘Charlene's Italian Table’, she filmed an exclusive set of VT's. After the success of 'Italian Table' she went on to feature in another ITV daytime favourite, John and Lisa's Weekend Kitchen.

As a fan of Fitaly, Gaby Roslin personally invited Charlene to feature on the food slot for her BBC Radio London show a few times, showcasing her dishes, eatery and culinary inspirations, tips and tricks from Italy. She also featured on a Deliveroo TV campaign as one of five 'Hero Chefs'.

Her passion for living out a creative and expressive lifestyle began to also take shape as she mentored young unsigned music artists and writers by helping them hone their natural talent while looking for opportunities to showcase and interview them about their work. She loves the idea of creating safe spaces for creativity and expression in the arts, in particular music, poetry and fashion. As a business owner, and recently nominated for the Octopus Entrepreneur Awards by Kensington MP Felicity Buchan, Charlene is also passionate about encouraging other Black females to step out in faith with their ideas in the business world and provides mentorship and motivational support when possible.

Charlene’s down to earth personality and naturally upbeat presenting vibe makes cooking, music or motivational talk very casual, relatable and very high-energy.

Charlene lives in London and loves a good old farmers market rummage for naturally gorgeous fruit and veg to inspire new dishes and loves writing poetry or honing her beat-making and looping skills when she has time!
